히버 큐 헤일에 의해서 행해진 말씀  -

저는 매우 겸손하고 감사하는 영을 느끼면서 저의 경험에 대해 부탁을 받고 말씀드리려고 합니다.  그것은 제게 매우 성스러운 것입니다. 간결하게 말씀드려야 할 필요성을 느끼며 더군다나 제가 알게 된 것 중에 일부는 언급해서는 안될 것 같습니다.

그 시현은 1920년 1월 20일 저녁 12시부터 아침 7시 30분 사이에 주어졌습니다.

아이다호 카레이에 있는 더블 에프 로슨의 집에서 이 영광스러운 시현이 나에게 주어졌으며 그 당시 방에는 혼자 있었습니다.   위에서 언급한 시간 동안 그 시현을 경험한 것 외에는 어떤 것도 의식할 수 없었습니다.    자면서 뒤척이지도 않았고 어떤 소리에 방해받지도 않았습니다. 그것은 참으로 내게 이상한 일이었습니다. 

 

그것을 꿈, 환영, 시현 혹은 영의 세계로의 영혼의 여행이라고 말해야 할지 모르겠으며 또한 그것이 그렇게 중요한 것 같지도 않습니다.

적어도내게는 이것으로 충분합니다.

  교회의 모든 교리와 가르침에서 죽은 자를 위한 계보 사업을 이해하기 어려웠고 진심으로 받아 들일 수 없었습니다.   나는 이 문제와 다른 질문에 대한 주님께서 주신 내 영혼의 기도의 응답이라고 생각합니다.

 

나는 어떤 막을 통해서 영의 세계로 들어갔는데 그 거리는 내 육신이 있는 곳으로부터 짧은

거리였습니다. 이것은 잠든 후 첫 번째로 경험한 것이었습니다. 나는 소위 죽음이라고 불리우는

변화를 통해서 그곳으로 갔는데 영의 세계에서 만난 불멸의 존재와 이야기하는 중에 그가 그렇게

말한 것으로 기억합니다. 영의 세계의 사람들은 인간들이 지상에서 죽음이라는 단어를 사용하고

그것에 공포를 느끼는 것에 언짢아하고 있었습니다.  잘 기억나지 않지만 그들은 필멸의 상태에서

불멸상태로 변화되는 과정을 다른 말로 표현했고 내 마음 속에 남아 있는 인상을 빌어본다면

죽음을 “새로운 탄생”이라고 했던 것 같았습니다.

내가 첫 번째로 느낀 인상은 이 세상과 영의 세계는 가깝다는 것입니다.  영의 세계의 하늘

공간의 광대함은 풋내기 영으로 봐도 어리둥절할 만한 것이었습니다. 많은 영들이 무제한적이며

방해받지 않는 시력과 행동을 즐기고 있었습니다.  그곳의 초목과 경치는 말로 표현할 수 없는 정도였으며 그것의 색채는 지상처럼 모두 녹색은 아니었고 무지개처럼 핑크, 오렌지와 엷은

자주색의 색채를 곁들인 금빛이었습니다.  모든 곳에는 감미로운 고요함이 은은히 깃들어

있었습니다.

                                     

나는 그곳에서 만난 사람들을 영의 존재로 생각한 것이 아니라 스스로 생각하고 스스로 행동하는

개인으로서의 남자와 여자로서 보았으며 그들은 가장 질서 있는 방법으로 각자 중요한 일을 하고 있었습니다. 그곳에는 완전한 질서가 있었고 모든 사람들에게는  각자의 임무가 있었으며 무언가

해야할 일들을 갖고 있었습니다.

 

영의 세계의 거주자들은 지상에서 하나님 아버지의 뜻에 얼마나 헌신 했는가와 순수한 삶의

정도에 따라 나누어져 있었습니다.  악하고 회개하지 않은 영들은 자신들 스스로 어떤 구역에

갇혀져 있었고 그들은  지상과 영의 세계가 얇은 막으로 명백하게 구분되어 있는 것처럼 그곳에

한정되어 있었으며 스스로 변화되기 전까지는 그 막을 통과할 수 없었습니다.  영의 세계는 죽은 자의 부활과 심판 때까지 모든 영들이 거주하고 있는 임시 장소입니다.  다른 공간의 영역들

안에서 많은 활동이 있었으며 주님의 구원사업에 임명된 사자들이 자신에게 지명된 선교사업을 수행하기 위해서 높은 영역에서 낯은 영역으로 내려가는 것을 볼 수 있었습니다.

 

나는 몇 명의 친척과 친구들을 만나보고 싶은 강한 충동(마음)이 생겼으며 그러나 나는 우리가 살고 있는 지구보다 더 크고 더 많은 사람들이 살고 있는 엄청나게 광대하고 넓은 세계에 들어와 있는 것 을 깨닫게 되었습니다.

나는 한번에 한 장소에만 있을 수 있었고 단지 하나의 일밖엔 하지 못했습니다.  또한 한번에 유일하게 한곳만 볼 수 있었으므로 내가 만나보고 싶은 사람들이나 알고 있는 사람들과 만나서 이야기하려면 그들을 특별히 불러오지 않는한 찾는데 몇 년이 걸릴 것 같았습니다.

모든 남자와 여자들은 잘 짜여진 계획 하에 특별하고 규칙적인 일을 하도록 임명되어 있었습니다,.

그들은 대개  개종하지 않은 영들에게 복음을 전하도록 명령을 받았고 지식을 추구하는 영들을 가르치고 가족관계를 수립하고 지상에 살아있는 자신들의 가족의 편의와 그들이 사용할 수 있도록 계보들을 모으고 있었고 그것으로 지상의 하나님의 성전들에서 지상을 떠난 자들을 위해 대리로 침례의식과 인봉의식이 행해질 수 있었습니다, 영의 세계에서 가족을 대표하고 허가 받은 자들은 지상의 성전 기록들을 볼 수 있도록 허가되어 있었으며, 성전에서 행해진 사업에 관해 완전한 조언을 줄 수 있었습니다.

 

지상에서 행해지는 대리 사업이 자동적으로 영의 세계에 영향을 주는 것은 아니었습니다. 영의 세계에 있는 영들이 첫째로 믿고 회개한 후 그들을 위해 지상에서 대리로 행해진 침례와 확인 의식을 받아 들여야합니다.

그 다음 완성된 대리의식은 개심한 영들의 삶 속에  구원의 원리들이 영향력을 행사하도록 해줍니다.  지상에서 할 수 없는 더 많은 일들이 영의 세계에서 영들에 의하여 행해지고 있으며 그곳에서 할 수 없는 일들은 지상에서 우리가 하고 있는 것입니다. 왜냐하면 구원 받아야할 모든 하나님의 자녀들이 구원받아야 하기 때문입니다.

 

나는 영의 세계에 팔에 안긴 아가들이 없는 것에 놀랬습니다. 내 제1보좌인 올슨 더블류 롤링 형제의 아들을 만났는데 그 애는 어린 유아로 몇년전에 죽었던 것으로 알고 있었지만 그곳에서 그를 보았을 때 예지와 존귀함을 갖고 있는 어른의 모습을 하고 있었으며 그는 그의 가족과 계보사업에 관련된 일을 하고 있었습니다.

나는 어머니들이 유아로 죽은 자녀들을 그들의 팔로 다시 받게 되고 더할 나위 없이 만족하게 될 것이라는 사실에 정말 기뻤습니다. 그러나 그 사실은 영의 세계로 가는 것이 성장의 중지가 아니라. 가장 위대한 발전의 기회라는 것을 상기시켜 주었습니다. 유아들은 작은 몸을 갖고 있으나 그 안에 거하는 영들은 성인 영들입니다.

 

나는 또 수많은  강한 남자 영들을 보게되었는데 한곳에 그렇게 많이 모여 있는 것을 본적이 없었으며 그들은 세계 전쟁 중에 싸우다 전사했던 수백만 명의 군인들이었음을 알게 되었습니다. 그들의 최고 사령관인 어떤 위대한 장군이 온화하고 장엄하게 그들 가운데서 움직이고 있는 것을 보았습니다. 내가 그에게 가까이 다가 갔을 때 그가 충성스러운 리쳐드 더블류 영 장군임을 알았고 그는 나에게 정중한 환영을 하면서 왕같은 미소를 지어 보였습니다. 그때 내 영혼에 강한 확신이 생겼는데 그것은 모두 산 자와 죽은 남자 가운데 그 위대한 사명에 그렇게 완전하고 적합한 사람이 영장군 밖에 없다는 것이었습니다. 그는 즉시 모든 군인들의 존경심과 주의를 모았습니다. 그는 위대한 장군이요, 하나님의 위대한 대제사 였습니다. 그에게 주어진 부름은 지상의 어떤 임무도 그 중요성과 범위에서 비교 될만한 것이 없었습니다. 내가 영 장군을 처음 보았을 때 그의 휘하에는 장교들과 남자 군인들로 완전하게 조직된 수많은 사단 규모의 병력이 있었으며 그 수는 엄청났습니다. 영장군은 모든 군인들이 앉아있는 곳에서 그들에게 정말 진지하고 온 정성을 다해 복음을 가르치고 있었습니다.

 

그곳을 떠나서 나는 앞으로 계속 나가자마자 나의 사랑하는 어머니를 만났습니다. 그분은 내게 가장 애정 어린 모습으로 인사하셨고 내가 그곳에 있는 것에 좀 놀란 표정을 지셨습니다. 그분은 어디론가 바삐 가는 모습이었고 곧 다시 나를 만나 보리라고 하시고는 곧 떠나셨습니다. 떠나시기 전에 그분은 내게 주어진 지상의 임무를 완수하지 못했다고 주지 시켜 주셨습니다.

나는 얼마간의 거리를 계속해서 여행했고 적지 않은 시간을 보냈으며 정말 경탄할 만한 풍경과 아름다운 공원 및 나무와 꽃들을 보았으며 알고는 있었지만 안면을 구별할 수 없는 수천 명의 영들을 만났습니다.

 

나는 이윽고 몇몇의 남자들이 서있는 길로 다가 갔으며 그 길은 황금빛을 내는 꽃들과 잔디와 관목 숲으로 우거진 넓은 길로 이어져 있었으며 그곳에서 나는 어떤 아름다운 빌딩을 주목하게 되었습니다. 그 분들은 열심히 대화를 나누고 있었는데 그분들 중에서 어떤 한 분이 내가 서 있는 길까지 내려 오셨습니다. 나는 즉시 그분이 내가 존경하는 죠셉 에프 스미스 대관장님이라는 것을 알 수 있었습니다. 그분은 아버지가 아들에게 하듯이 나를 껴안아 주었으며 몇 마디 인사를 하시고 바로 다음과 같이 말씀하셨습니다. “그대는 이곳에 있어서는 안되오.” 그 말씀은 그냥 말씀하는 것이라기 보다는 선언하는 것 같았습니다. 처음으로 나는 그곳에 남아있고 싶은 만큼 지상에서 끝내지 못한 나의 사명에 대해서 의식하기 시작했습니다. 나는 바로 지상에 돌아갈 수 있는지에 대해서 스미스 대관장님께 물어 보았습니다. 그분은 “그대는 의로운 소망을 표현했소.”라고 답해 주셨으며 “이 문제에 대해 총관리 역원들과 함께 상의한 후 그대에게 알려 주겠소.”라고 하셨습니다. 우리는 그분께서 막 떠나 오셨던 남자들이 서있던 곳으로 갔으며 그분은 나를 그곳까지 안내해 주셨습니다.

나는 즉시 브리감영 대관장님과 요셉스미스를 알아 보았습니다. 브리감영 대관장님은 내가 생각했던 것보다 더 작고 강직한 몸을 갖고 있는 것에 놀랐으며 예언자 요셉스미스는 기대했던 것보다 키가 더 컸습니다.  그 두분과 스미스 대관장은 동정심이 많고 왕 같으며 온화하고 성자 같은 위엄을 갖고 있었습니다. 우리는 다시 내가 있던 곳으로 돌아왔고 스미스 대관장님께서는 떠나시면서 다시 나를 보게 될 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다.

 

어떤 유익을 위해서인지 나는 지구에서 일어나고 있는 일들을 볼 수 있도록 허가 받았습니다. 내 시야는 어떠한 제한도 받지 않았으며 나는 이것에 놀랄 수밖에 없었습니다. 나는 아내와 자녀들이 집에 있는 것을 보았습니다. 나는 하나님의 왕국과 그 위대한 교회의 최고 책임자인 히버 제이 그랜트 대관장님을 보았으며 하나님으로부터 퍼져나오는 성스러운 권세가 그것에 빛과 진리를 주며 그 운명을 인도하고 있는 것을 보았습니다.

나는 미국이 올바른 원리 위에 세워진 나라이며 견디도록 계획되었으나 하나님의 목적을 망치고 사람들을 실족케하는 악마와 사악한 세력들에 의해서 둘러 싸여 있는 것을 보았습니다. 나는 읍과 도시들을 보았으며 그곳에는 여러 남녀들의 죄악과 간악함 들이 있었습니다.

나는 바다 위를 항해하는 배들을 보았고 프랑스와 벨기에의 전쟁 이남긴 처참한 싸움터를 대충 훑어보았습니다. 한마디로 말한다면 모든 지상을 다 보았으며 그것은 마치 내 눈앞에서 파노라마처럼 지나갔습니다.

 

어떤 영이나 영들에게 지상에서 행할 특별한 임무가 주어졌을 때나 특별한 허가가 내려졌을 때 지상과 그곳의 광경과 그곳에 살고 있는 사람들에 대한 시현이 보여지는 것을 확실히 알 수 있었습니다. 이것은 특별히 동시에 두곳 즉 영의 세계와 지상 양쪽에서 바쁘게 일을 하는 의로운 자들에게만 특별히 적용되는 것입니다.

 

간악하고 회개하지 않는 영들은 나머지 모든 자들처럼 자신의 자유의지를 갖고 있으면서 쓸모 없고 유익하지 않은 것에 힘을 쏟고 나쁜 영들을 쫓는데서 기쁨을 추구하며 그들의 간악함은 타락하는 인간의 죄와 악속에서 더욱 더 그 사악함이  무르익게 되는 것입니다. 그들은 대부분 사탄의 도구가 되며 강신술사나 강령 회나 부적 판을 사용하는 영매들인 비참한 사기꾼들에게 나타나는 게으르며 유해한 거짓 영들입니다.

고귀하고 위대한 자들은 영매나 무당들과 이런 것에 호기심이 없고 또 그것을 추구하는 자들의 유혹에 어떠한 반응도 보이지 않습니다.   그들은 필멸의 상태에서나 불멸의 세계에서 지식이 증가된 상태에서도 그런 것을 하지 않습니다.

이들 간악하고 회개하지 않는 영들은 사탄과 그 악마 영들과 연합을 이루고 있으며 지상에 있는 강한 영매나 무당을 통해서 일을 합니다. 이 세력의 힘들은 지상에서 부정한 삼위일체를 이루며 인간들의 세상과 여러 나라에서 일어나는 죄, 사악함, 재난과 불행에 대한 원인이 됩니다.

 

나는 모든 것에 깃든 아름다움을 보면서 즐겼으며 모든 것을 통해서 모든 사람에게 충만하게 임하고 있는 말로 표현할 수 없는 화평과행복에 찬사를 보냈습니다.  내가 더 앞으로 갔을 때 더욱 영광스러운 광경이 펼쳐졌으며 내가 서 있던 곳에서 가까운 거리에 정말 아름다운 황금색 돔으로 장식된 성전이 있는 것을 보았습니다. 그곳에서 하얀 로브를 입고 있던 남자들이 나와서는  간단한 대화를 나누기 위해서 잠시 서 있었습니다. 그런 식으로 옷을 입은 사람들은 처음 보았습니다. 내가 전에 보았던 수백만 명의 사람들은 모두 유니폼을 입고 있었습니다. 이 성스러운 분들 중에서 나의 시선은 그 나머지 분들보다 더 빛나고  더 성스러운 분을 향했습니다.

내가 쳐다보고 있을 때 조셉 에프 스미스 대관장님은 그분들로부터 나와서 내곁으로 다가 왔습니다.  그분은 나에게 “그 분을 아시오?”라고 물었습니다. 나는 재빨리 “예, 저는 그 분을 압니다. 저는 저의 주님, 구세주를 보고 있습니다. ”라고 대답했습니다.  스미스 대관장님은 “그렇소!”라고 하셨습니다.

오! 나의 영혼은 환희로 떨렸으며 나의 마음은 말로 형용할 수 없는 기쁨으로 충만했습니다. 스미스 대관장님은 내가 돌아가는 것이 허락되었고 주님께서 명하신 완수해야할 지상의 임무를 마쳐야한다고 하시면서 나의 어깨에 그분의 손을 얹으셨습니다. 잊지 못할 다음의 중대한 말씀을 해주셨습니다. 

“히버 형제여, 그대는 해야할 위대한 사업을 갖고 있소. 기도하는 마음으로 계속 그것을 수행하시오, 그러면 교회에서 봉사하는 동안 축복을 받을 것이요, 이 시간 이후부터는 하나님께서는 살아 계시고 예수 그리스도는 독생자이시며 세상의 구세주라는 사실과 성신은 아버지와 아들을 증거 하시는 분으로서 영의 하나님을 결코 의심하지 마시오.

또한 죽은 자의 부활과 영혼의 불멸성과 인간의 운명이 영원한 발전에 있다는 것도 결코 의심하지 마시오. 말일성도의 사명은 살았거나 죽은 자 모두  즉 모든 인류에게 있다는 것과 거룩한 성전에서 산 자와   죽은 자를 위해 행해지는 위대한 사업이 막 시작하였다는 것을 다시는 의심하지 마시오. 말일에 복음의 충만한 경륜의 시대를 열고 그 길을 인도하기 위해 요셉 스미스가 하나님으로부터 보내졌으며 그의 후계자들은 모두 하나님으로부터 부름 받고 승인 받았던 자들이었으며 히버 제이 그랜트 현 대관장은 현재 이 지상의 예수 그리스도 교회의 머리로 성임 받고 인정받았다는 사실을 알아두시오. 그분께 그대의 확신과 지지를 전하시오.

그대가 이곳에서 보고 들었던 많은 것들에 대해서 지상에 돌아간 후 말해지는 것이 금지될 것이오.”

 

그 분은 내게 작별을 고하셨고 하나님의 축복이 나에게 임하시기를 빌었습니다.

 

정말 먼길을 통해 여러 모습을 보면서 수많은 영들을 지나 내가 맨 처음 들어왔던 곳으로 돌아 왔습니다. 돌아오는 도중에 많은 친구들과 친척들과 만나서 인사를 나누었고 어떤 이들은 지상의 가족에게 안부와 위안의 말씀을 전해달라고 부탁했습니다. 나의 어머니도 그들 중의 한 분이셨습니다.

나는 죤 아담슨 형제와 그의 아내, 아들 제임스와 딸 이사벨을 만났는데 그들도 안부를 전해달라고 했던 사람들이었고 또 다른 사람에 대해서는  조금 후에 다시 언급하겠습니다.  그곳에서 만났던 아담슨 형제 가족 네명은 1915년 10월29일 저녁에 아이다호 카레이에서 살인자의 손에 의해서 모두 살해되었던 사람들이었습니다. 아담슨 형제는 내가 필멸의 세상으로 돌아가자마자 다음의 말씀을 지상에 남아 있는 그의 자녀들에게 꼭 전해 달라고 부탁했습니다.

“우리들은 영의 세계에서 매우 행복하고  바쁘게 지내고 있으니 우리들이 지상을 떠난 것에 대해서 슬퍼해서는 안된다. 지상에서 생각하는 것처럼 우리의 죽음에 대해서 걱정하지 말고 그것에는 어떤 목적이 있었으며 그 목적이란 개인적으로 할 수 없고 우리가 힘을 합쳐야만 할 수 있는 일들이 영의 세계에 있었고 그 사명을 완수해야 하는 것이었다.”

나는 그 즉시 그 일이란 영국과 스코틀랜드에서 그들이 행하고 있는 계보 사업에 관련된 것임을 알 수 있었습니다.

 

하늘에서 가장 웅대하고 성스러운 것중에 하나는 가족관계입니다.  가족의 고리가 끊어지지 않고 완전히 연결될 때 충만한 기쁨을 가져다줍니다. 대가족의 고리 중에 나쁜 사람들이 있으면 그들은 제외되고 새로운 사람들로 채워지며 그 고리가 다시 연결됩니다.  영의 세계에 있는 영들은 전 세계각지에서 살고 있는 자신의 후손들에게 죽은 조상들의 계보를 모으도록 영감을 주고 있었습니다. 이것들이 가족을 연결해주는 고리 입니다. 그리고 죽은 자를 위해서 산 자들에 의해 지상의 하나님의 성전에서 집행되는 침례,엔다우먼트,인봉 의식들이 그 고리를 결합시켜 주었습니다. 지상에서 대리로 베풀어지는 의식들은 복음의 구원 원리들을 받아들인 개개인의 영들에게 영향력을 주게 됩니다.

 

내가 영의 세계로 처음 들어 왔던 곳에 다다르고 있을 때 나의 시선은 여러 명의 여자 영들에게 향하게 되었습니다. 그들은 어떤 옷을 입히기 위해서 준비하고 있었으며 내가 호기심 있는 얼굴을 보이자 어떤 여인이 그것을 알아차리고 “우리는 곧 이곳으로 오게 될 필립 월싱톤 형제님을 맞이하기 위해 준비하고 있습니다. ”

내가 그의 이름을 기억하려고 하자 다음과 같은 충고의 말씀을 들려주었습니다.

“영의 세계에서 기다리고 있는 형제님의 영광스러운 기쁨과 사명을 당신께서 아신다면 지상에서 그분이 더 살도록 권유하지 않으실 것입니다.”

그때 다음과 같은 엄청난 진리가 내 마음속으로 흘러들어 오고 있었습니다. 우리가 주님의 뜻에 완전히 의지하고 그분의 뜻이 우리를 통해서 또 우리 안에서 이루어지도록 할 때 그 분의 뜻이 하늘에서 이루어진 것처럼 땅에서도 이루어지게 된다는 것입니다.

인간의 이기심과 개인의 고집 때문에 죄없고 청결과 화평속에서 살수 있었던 많은 사람들이 하나님의 뜻과 의지에  거역하여 고통스럽고 비참하며 타락하고 죄많은 인생을 살게 되고 위험 속에 처해있는 삶속에서 생활하게 됩니다.

 

남자와 여자 그리고 어린이들이 장막 저쪽에서 더 위대하고 중요한 사명 때문에 영의 세계로의 부름을 받게 됩니다. 지상을 떠나는 것을 거절하고 그들의 사랑하는 사람들이 삶을 포기하지 않도록 하는 동안 정말 같은 일이 영의 세계에도 일어납니다. 또한 많은 사람들이 회복 될만한 신앙이 없어서 죽게 됩니다. 그리고 어떤 사람들은 지상에서 살다가 성스러운 뜻에 의해서 특별한 시현이 보이지 않은 채 저 세상으로 가게 됩니다.

어떤 사람이 아프게 되었을 때 정말 중요한 질문은 그가 살게 되느냐 혹은 죽게 되느냐가 아니라 지상에 살 동안 하나님 아버지의 뜻을 얼마나 행했는가에 있습니다. 참으로  우리는 하나님을 신뢰해야합니다. 하나님께서는 의로운 자들에게 예수 그리스도 교회의 장로들이 안수하는 자들에게 하나님 아버지의 뜻이 이루어지도록 하는 성신권의 권세와 성역을 베풀도록 특별한 의무와 특권을 주셨습니다.

어떤 이유에서라든지 그들이 아버지의 뜻을 예견할 수 없다면 고통받는 자를 위해서 신앙의 기도를 계속해야 하는데 그것은 절대자이신 하나님의 뜻대로 이루어지도록 하는 겸손한 기도이어야 합니다. 그분의 뜻이 하늘에서 이루어진 것처럼 지상에서도 이루어질 것입니다.

 

후에  내가 보이스로 돌아 왔을 때 어떤 전보를 받았는데 그 전보에는 1920년 1월 22일에 필립 월싱톤 형제가 세상을 떠났고 1920년 1월25일에 있을 그의 장례식에서 말씀을 해달라는 것이었습니다.

 

의로운 자에게는 영의 세계에서의 탄생이 영광스러운 특권이며 축복입니다. 아버지 가족에 속해있는 위대한 영들은 그들의 지상에서의 사명이 완수되었으면 더 이상 필멸의 상태에서 살게되는것이 보통으로 허락되지 않습니다.  그들은 일할 것이 더 많고 일꾼들이 적은 영의 세계로 부름을 받게 됩니다. 이 지상의 임무는 아버지의 뜻에 따라 길어질 수도 있고 짧아질 수도 있습니다.

 

내영은 영의 세계로 들어갔던 곳으로 빨리 빠져 나와서 즉시 내 몸속으로 들어 왔습니다. 그리고 내가 보았고 들었던 많은 놀랄만한 것들에 대해서 명상하고 기록을 했습니다.

 

나는 지금 이곳에서 다른 사람들의 견해에 상관없이 다음과 같이 선언하는 바입니다. 나는 확실히 내 개인적인 지식과 경험으로 하나님께서는 모든 인류의 영의 아버지가 되시며 또한 그분께서는 살아 계시고, 예수 그리스도는 그분의 독생자이시며 세상의 구세주이시라는 것입니다. 인간의 영은 죽지 않으며 죽음이라는 변화를 통해서 영의 세계로 들어가 삶을 계속 유지하며 영의 세계는 바로  이 지구와 가깝게 있습니다. 지금 구원의 원리들이 영의 세계의 영들에게 가르쳐지고 있으며 또한 아버지의 가족들을 구원하는 위대한 사업이 산 자와 죽은 자 가운데 진행되고 있으며 궁극적으로는 실족되는 사람들이 거의 없게 되리라는 것과 영들은 부활할 때 문자 그대로 다시 그의 몸을 받게 된다는 것입니다.  예수 그리스도의 복음은 지상에 그것에 관련된 모든 열쇠와 권능과 축복을 회복시켰으며 예언자 요셉스미스를 통해서 그것이 이루어 졌습니다. 예수 그리스도의 복음은 그것에 순종하는 모든 사람을 구원하고 승영할 수 있도록 할뿐만 아니라 궁극적으로 세상을 구원하는 권세인 것입니다. 우리의 사명은 하나님 편에 서서 영혼을 구원하는 것이며 죽은 자들의 구원을 위해 행해지는 사업은 산 자와 죽은 자의 사업 못지 않게 중요한 것입니다.

A HEAVENLY MANIFESTATION
Given to Heber Q. Hale
A heavenly manifestation given to Heber Q. Hale, president of the Boise Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, is related by him at the Genealogical Conference held in the Auditorium of the Bishops Building, Salt Lake City, Utah, in October 1920, (requested by the Presidency of the Church in 1920.)

"It is with a very humble and grateful spirit that I attempt to relate on this occasion, by request, a personal experience which is very sacred to me. I must of necessity be brief. Furthermore, there were certain things made known to me, which I don't feel at liberty to relate here. Let me say by way of preface that between the hours of 12 and 7:30 (AM) on the night of January 20, 1920, while alone in a room at the home of W.F. Rawson in Carey, Idaho, this glorious manifestation was vouchsafed to me.

I was not conscious of anything that transpired during the hours mentioned, except what I experienced in this manifestation. I did not turn over in bed nor was I disturbed by any sound, which indeed is unusual for me. Whether it be called a dream, an apparition, a vision, or a pilgrimage of my spirit into the world of spirits I know not, I care not. I know that I actually saw and experience the things related in this Heavenly Manifestation, and they are as real to me as my any experience of my life.

For me at least this is sufficient. Of all the doctrines and practices of the Church, the principle of vicarious work for the dead has been the most difficult for me to comprehend and whole-heartedly accept. I consider this vision is the Lord's answer to the prayer of my soul on this and certain other questions.

I passed but a short distance from my body through a film into the world of spirits. This was my first experience after going to sleep. I seemed to realize that I had passed through the chance called death and I so referred to it in my conversation with the immortal beings with whom I immediately came in contact. I readily observed their displeasure at our use of the word death and the fear, which we attach to it. They use there another word in reference to the transition from mortality to immortality which word I don't recall and I can only approach its meaning and impression which was left upon my mind, by calling it "The New Birth".

My first visual impression was the nearness of the world of spirits to the world of mortality. The vastness of this heavenly sphere was bewildering to the eyes of the spirit-novice. Many enjoyed unrestricted vision and action. The vegetation and landscape were beautiful beyond description, not all green as here, but gold with varying shades of pink, orange and lavender as the rainbow. A sweet calmness pervaded everything. The people I met there I did not think of as spirits, but as men and women, self thinking and self acting individuals, going about important business in a most orderly manner. There was perfect order there and everybody had something to do and seemed to be about their business,

that the inhabitants of the spirit world are classified according to their lives of purity and their subservience to the Father's will was subsequently made apparent. Particularly was it observed that the wicked and unrepented are confined to a certain district by themselves, the confines of which are as definitely determined and impassible as the line marking the division of the physical from the spirit world. A mere film, but impassible until the person himself was changed. The world of spirit is the temporary abode of all spirits pending the resurrection from the dead and the judgement. There was much activity within the different spheres and appointed ministers of salvation were seen coming from the highest to the lower spheres in pursuit of their missionary appointments.

I had a pronounced desire to meet certain of my kinsfolk and friends but I was at once impressed with the fact that I had entered a tremendously great and extensive world, even greater than our earth and more numerously inhabited. I could only be in one place at once, could do only one thing at a time, could only look in one direction at a time and accordingly it would require many, many years to search out and converse with all those I had known and all those whom I desired to meet unless they were especially summoned to receive me. All men and women are appointed to special and regular service under a well organized plan of action directed principally towards preaching the Gospel to the unconverted, teaching those who seek for knowledge and establishing family relationships, and gathering genealogies for the use and benefit of mortal survivors of their respective families; That the work of Baptism and the Sealing ordinances may be vicariously performed for the departed in the temples of God on the earth.

The authorized representatives of families in the world of spirits have access to our Temple records and are kept fully advised of the work done therein. But, the vicarious work done there does not become automatically effective. The recipients must first believe, repent and accept baptism and confirmation. Then, certain consummating ordinances are performed effectualizing these saving principles in the life of these regenerated beings. And so the great work is going on… They're doing a work there which we cannot do here and we a work here that they cannot do there for the salvation of all God's children who will be saved.

I was surprised to find there no babies in arms. I met the infant son of O. Rawlings my First Counselor. I immediately recognized him as the baby who died a few years ago and yet he seemed to have the intelligence, and in certain respect, the appearance of an adult and was engaged in matters pertaining to his family and its genealogy. My mind was quite contented upon the point that mothers will again receive into their arms their children who died in infancy and will be fully satisfied, and the fact that entrance into the world of spirits is not an inhabitation of growth, but the greatest opportunity of development. Babies are adult spirits in the infant bodies.

I presently beheld a mighty multitude of men. The largest I had ever seen gathered in one place, who I immediately recognized as soldiers, the millions who died, who had been slaughtered and rushed to the spirit world during the first world war. Among them moved calmly and majestically a great general in supreme command. As I drew nearer, I received the kindly smile and generous welcome of a great loving man, General R. Young. Then came the positive conviction to my soul that of all the men living or dead, there is no one who is so perfectly fitted for the great mission unto which he had been called. He commands immediately the attention and respect of all the soldiers; he is a once great general and a great High Priest of God. No earthly field of labour, to which he could have been assigned, could compare with it in importance and extent. I passed from this scene to return later when I found General Young and his vast army of men completely organized with officers over successive divisions and he was preaching the gospel in great earnestness to them.

As I passed forward, I soon met my beloved mother. She greeted me most affectionately and expressed surprise at seeing me there and reminded me that I had not completed my allocated mission on earth. She seemed to be going somewhere and was in a hurry and accordingly took her leave saying that she would see me soon again.

I moved forward covering an appreciable distance and consuming considerable time, viewing the wonderful sights of landscape, parks and trees and flowers and meeting people. Some I knew, but many, a thousand, I did not recognize as acquaintances.

I presently approached a small group of men standing in a path lined with spacious stretches of flowers, grasses and shrubs, all of gold and hue, marking the approach to a beautiful building. The group was engaged in earnest conversation. One of their number parted from the rest and came walking down the path. I at once recognized my esteemed President Joseph F. Smith. He embraced me as a father would a son and after a few words of greeting, quickly remarked, "You have not come to stay". This remark I understood as a declaration, not as interrogation.

For the first time I became fully conscious of my uncompleted mission on earth and as much as I would have liked to remain, I at once asked President Smith if I might return. "You have expressed a righteous desire" he replied, "and I shall take the matter up with the authorities and let you know later".

We then return and he led me toward the little group of men from whom he had judst separated. I immediatley recognized President Brigham Young and the Prophet Joseph Smith.  I was surprised to find the former a shorter and heavier-built man than I had pictured him in my mind to be. on the other hand I found the latter to be taller than I had expected to find him. Both they and President Smith were possessed of a  calm and holy majesty which was at once kind and kingly.  We then retraced our steps and President Smith took his leave, saying he would see me again.

From a certain point of vantage, I was permitted to view the earth and what was going on there. There was no limitation of my vision and I was astounded at this. I saw my wife and my children at home. ...I beheld this nation founded as it is upon correct principles and designed to endure, but beset by evil and sinister forces that seek to lead man to thwart the purpose of God. I saw towns and cities, the sins and the wickedness of men and women. I saw vessels sailing the oceans and scanned the battle-scarred fields of France and Belgium.

In a word, I beheld the whole world, as if it were but a panorama passing before my eyes. Then there came to me the unmistakable impression that this earth and scenes and persons upon it are open to the vision of the spirits only when special permission is given or when they are assigned to special service here. This is particularly true of the righteous, who are busily engaged in the fields of activity. At the same time the wicked and unrepentant have still, like the rest, their free agency and applying themselves to no useful or wholesome undertaking, seek pleasure about their old haunts and exalt in the sin and wickedness of degenerated humanity. To this extent they were still tools of Satan. It is these idle, mischievous and deceptive spirits who appear as miserable counterfeits at spiritualist seances, table dancing and Quije board operations.

The noble and great ones do not respond to the call of the medium and to every group of meddlesome enquirers. They would not do it in the world of mortality. These wicked and unrepented spirits are allies of Satan and his host operating through willing mediums in the flesh. These three forces constitute an unholy trinity upon the earth and are responsible for all the sin, wickedness, distress and misery among the men and nations.

I moved forward feasting my eyes upon the beauty of everything about me and glorying in the indescribable peace and happiness that abounded in everybody and through everything. The further I went the more glorious things appeared. While standing at a certain vantagepoint I beheld a short distance away a wonderful beautiful Temple, capped with golden domes, from which emerged a small group of men dressed in white robes who paused for a brief conversation. ...In this little group of holy men my eyes centered upon one more splendorous and holy than the rest. While I thus gazed, President Joseph F. Smith parted from the others and came to my side. "Do you know Him," he inquired? I quickly answered, "Yes, I know Him, my eyes behold my Lord and Saviour". "It is time," said President Smith and oh, how my soul thrilled with rapture and unspeakable joy filled my heart. President Smith informed me that I had been given permission to complete the mission on the earth, which the Lord had appointed me to fulfill, and then with his hand upon my shoulder, uttered these memorable and significant words.

"Brother Heber, you have a great work to do. Go forward with a prayerful heart and thou shall be blessed in thy ministry. From this time on never doubt that God lives, that Jesus Christ is the Son, the Saviour of the world, that the Holy Ghost is God of Spirit and the Messenger of the Father and the Son; never doubt the resurrection of the dead and immortality of the soul. That the destiny of man is eternal progress. Never again doubt that the mission of the Latter-Day Saints is for all mankind, both the living and the dead and that the great work in the holy Temples for the living and the dead has only begun. His successors have recognized and ordained head of the Church of Jesus Christ upon the earth. Give him you confidence and support. Much you have seen and heard you will not be permitted to repeat when you return." Thus saying he bade me goodbye and God Bless you.

Quite disarranged, through various scenes and passing unnumbered people, I traveled before I reached the spheres, which I first entered. On my way I was greeted by many friends and relatives, certain of whom sent words of greetings and council to their dear ones here, my mother being one of them. One other I will mention, I met Brother J. Adamson, his wife, his son and their daughter, all of whom were killed by a foul assassin in their home at Carey, Idaho in the evening of October 29, 1915. They seemed to define that I was on my way back to mortality and immediately said "Tell the children that we are very happy and very busy and they should not mourn our departing, nor worry their minds over the manner by which we were taken. There is a purpose in it and we have a work to do here which required our collective efforts and which we could not do individually". I was at once made to know that the work referred to was that of genealogy on which they were working in England and Scotland.

One of the grandest and most sacred things of heaven is the family relationship. The establishment of the complete chain without any broken links being a fullness of joy. Links wholly bad will be dropped out and either new links put in or the two adjoining links welded together. Men and women everywhere throughout the world are being moved upon by their departed ancestors to gather genealogies. These are the links for the chain. The ordinances of baptism, endowments and sealings performed in the Temples of God, by the living for the dead, are the welding of the links. Ordinances are performed in the spirit world effectu-alizing the individual recipient for their reciving the saving principles of hte gospel vicaricusly performed here.

As I was approaching the place where I entered, my attention was attracted towards a number of small groups of women, preparing what appeared to me, wearing apparel. Observing my inquiring countenance one of the women remarked, "We are preparing to receive Bother Worthington very soon". As I gasped his name in petition, I was admonished, "If you knew the joy and the glorious mission that awaits him here, you would not ask to have him longer detained upon the earth." Then came flooding my consciousness, this awful truth that the will of the Lord can be done on earth as it is in heaven only when we resign completely to his will and let His will be done in the through us. On account of the selfishness of many, persons who might have otherwise been taken in innocence and peace have been permitted to live, and have lived to their own perils, man and the assertion of the personal will as against the will of God, many persons who might otherwise have been taken in innocence and peace have been permitted to live and have passed a life of suffering and misery or debauchery and crime and have lived to their own peril.

Men, women and children are often called to missions of great importance on the other side and some respond gladly while others refuse to go and their loved ones will not give them up. Also many die because they have not the faith to be healed. Others yet live among and pass out of the world of mortals without any special manifestation of action of the divine will.  When a man is stricken ill the question of prime importance is not… is he going to live? Or is he going to die? What matters is not whether he lives or dies as long as the will of the Father is done.
Surely we can trustt him with God. He lies the special duty and privilege of administration by the right  and authority of hte holy Priesthood, namely: it is given the elders of the church of Jesus christ to divine the will of hte Father concerning the one upon whose head their hands are laid. If for any reason they are unable to presage the Father's will, then they should continue to pray in faith for the afflicted one, humbly conceding supremacy to do the will of god, that His will may be done on earth as it is done in Heaven.
Phillip Worthington died January 22, 1920 for which I was advised by telegram and returning to Boise, preached his funeral sermon on 25th January 1920.

...To the righteous person, birth into the world of spirits is a glorious privilege and blessing. The greatest spirits in the family of the Father have not usually been permitted to tarry longer in the flesh than to perform a certain mission, then they are called to the world of spirits where the field is greater and workers fewer. This earthly mission may therefore be long or short as the Father wills.

I passed quietly out; where I had entered the world of spirits, immediately my body was quickened. And I was to ponder over and record the many wonderful things I had seen and heard.

Let me here and now declare to the world that, irrespective of the opinion of others, I know of my own positive knowledge and from my own personal experiences that God is the Father of the Spirits of all men and that he lives. That Jesus Christ is His Son and the Saviour of the world. That the spirit of man does not die but survives the change called death and goes to the world of spirits. The world of spirit is on or near the earth. That the principles of salvation are now being taught to the spirits, and the great work of saving the Fathers family among the living and the dead is now in progress and that but comparatively few will ultimately be lost. That spirits will literally take up their bodies again in the resurrection and that the Gospel of Jesus Christ has been established upon the earth with all of its keys, powers, authority and blessings through the instrumentality of the Prophet Joseph Smith. That this is the power that will not only save and exalt everyone who yields obedience to its principles but will ultimately save the world. That the burden of our mission is to save souls unto God. And that the work for the salvation of the dead is no less of importance than the work for the living and the dead.
